Forecaster Bill Borghoff says 6-10 inches of new snow may fall overnight in the metro area.
"We should start to see some rain push in later this afternoon, probably around mid-afternoon," he said. "Then colder air will begin to arrive this evening, and basically, all that rain is going to turn to snow, and we're looking for a period of heavy snow this evening, and overnight, with hourly rates of one to two inches possible. So its going to come down very hard this evening."
Forecasters are expecting expecting 4 to 8 inches of new snow from the storm in Duluth and Mankato. St. Cloud should expect 3 to 5 inches of snowfall. Rochester is likely to see less than an inch overnight, and another half-inch on Tuesday.
Big April snowstorms are rare, but not unheard of. A famous storm in 1893 left a reported 30 inches of snow in St. Cloud on April 21, according to the Minnesota Climatology Working Group. The Twin Cities got 10 inches from that storm.
The storm should end early Tuesday. High temperatures in the Twin Cities could top 60 degrees by Friday, and approach 70 degrees by Sunday.
