The push to develop drought-resistant crops

As the drought continues across the country this summer, there is growing interest in crops that can survive in these conditions.

The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded $12 million dollars to a number of institutions, including the University of Minnesota, to develop drought-resistant grasses that can be used as biofuels.

The lead researcher on this project at the University of Minnesota is Dan Voytas of the College of Biological Sciences. He talked about his research with Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer.
