A string of accidents in Minnesota waters has public safety officials urging people to take precautions when boating and swimming. So far this year, five people have died while boating on Minnesota waterways and 19 people have drowned in non-boating related incidents. That's nearly double the number of drownings from the same period last year.
Tim Smalley, boat and water safety specialist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, talked about the trend with Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer.
