Highs today in the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota are expected to hit between 75 and 80 degrees Friday, which could break the state record of 75 degrees set on March 16, 1930 in Fairmont.
University of Minnesota Climatologist Mark Seeley told MPR's Morning Edition that the persistent warm temperatures recently mean ice is leaving the lakes very quickly.
"Two to three weeks earlier than normal is the estimate, a lot of lakes going out very fast," Seeley said. "Frost is gone out of the ground, by the way. That's a good sign, because now when we get that rainfall next week, we'll get most of it soaking into the soil, which will be very good for replenishing our soil."
More records are possible this weekend with 80 degree high temperatures possible in southern Minnesota and the metro through Sunday.
