Minneapolis crews are working to reinforce the Sabo Bridge after one set of suspension cables on the pedestrian and bicycle bridge failed several days ago.
Crews have installed two sets of the four supports needed to stabilize the Sabo Bridge, city officials say. The remaining reinforcements should be in place in the next couple of days.
Once all four supports are in place, crews will release tension from a second set of compromised cables. The city has contracted with a forensic engineering firm to determine the cause of the bridge's failure. Engineers have been evaluating the span's stability and looking for signs of cracking, bowing or other problems with bridge cables.
The most recent inspection of the Sabo bridge in September found no evidence of problems, city officials said.
The city is diverting traffic on Hiawatha Avenue near the bridge, and Metro Transit continues to run shuttle buses around a closed light rail station between Franklin Avenue and 38th Street.
