Duluth is the first Minnesota city to ban synthetic marijuana. The city council voted unanimously last night to make it illegal to buy, sell or possess the products within city limits. Sold as "incense" under brand names including Genie, K-2 and Spice, synthetic marijuana is made of dried herbs sprayed with a chemical that mimics the active ingredient in pot.
MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Jim Carlson, owner of Last Place on Earth in Duluth. Carlson started selling products containing synthetic marijuana about a year ago, and Carlson says those products make up approximately half of its total sales.
