MPR News Update

Good afternoon. Following the nightclub shooting in Orlando early Sunday, Annie Anderson, engagement and inclusion manager for MPR's Public Insight Network, reflected on the significance of gay bars and the role they play as a safe space. The slayings were a "virtual massacre on the collective LGBTQ soul," she wrote. | Read the full commentary here
Good morning! Mostly cloudy with some showers and thunderstorms. Highs range from the mid-60s to 80s. Another Minnesota town is getting its 15-seconds of fame. Last week, Montevideo appeared in an ad for a Movistar phone. This week, it's Kiester in the spotlight. The city plays a starring role in a TV commercial for -- what else? -- a hemorrhoid medication. | Forecast
Good afternoon. Get ready for some potentially severe storms in the Twin Cities metro area later today. Hail and damaging winds are the primary severe threats. | Updraft weather blog
Good morning! Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms likely, some of which could be severe. Highs in the lower 70s and 80s. Happy Flag Day! Good afternoon. Prince now has a Ph.D. Well, an honorary one at least. The University of Minnesota says it's awarding the singer a posthumous honorary doctorate of humane letters. Good afternoon. President Barack Obama has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. They'll campaign together next week in Wisconsin. Obama met with Bernie Sanders this morning and despite Clinton securing enough delegates to be the Democratic Party's presumptive nominee, Sanders says he'll still take his campaign issues to the party convention next month. | Full story
Good afternoon. It's going to be a uniquely Minnesotan weather week. Up north, there were freezing temps this morning. But by Friday, it'll be in the 90s. MPR chief meteorologist Paul Huttner expects temps to hit triple digits in a few towns. | Updraft weather blog
Good morning! Mostly sunny today with highs in the 70s and 80s. And now an update on a story we brought you earlier this year: Diamond Syas found herself homeless and largely alone during last school year. It would have been easy to become another Minnesota dropout statistic. But she didn't quit. The sweet payoff for that struggle came last Thursday when Diamond, a senior at Bloomington Kennedy High School, took the stage at Mariucci Arena, accepted her diploma and put her college plans back on track. | Forecast
Good afternoon. Just a week after endorsing him for president, House Speaker Paul Ryan has disavowed Donald Trump's remarks on an American-born judge as the "textbook definition of a racist comment." The presumptive Republican nominee said the judge isn't qualified to preside over a case because of his Mexican heritage. However, Ryan didn't switch his allegiance and is still backing Trump. | Full story
