The original proposal would have made it a petty misdemeanor to smoke cannabis or tobacco products on city-controlled property, including parks and sidewalks. But council members may adjust the proposal. And late Wednesday a U.S. District Court Judge dismissed a lawsuit that Twin Metals filed last year to try revive its stalled attempt to develop a proposed copper-nickel mine on the doorstep of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The state Department of Revenue says some Minnesotans are mistaking rebate checks for junk mail and discarding them. And crews continued work Wednesday to extinguish a 40-acre wildfire in Carlton County that ignited on Labor Day. Tuesday is the first day of school for most districts. Other schools started before Labor Day. Minneapolis and St. Paul schools sent out reminders Monday, encouraging parents to make sure their kids are hydrated and are dressed for the heat. Most of Minnesota will be hot, but also smoky in some places, too.
Record heat is likely in southern and central Minnesota this weekend, but it will be much drier than last week's heat wave.
