Maria Genne, the founder and artistic director of Kairos Dance, used to have a career that focused on dancing with young people. But as she grew older, Genne began looking at how she could create dance in which everyone felt welcome, and how music and storytelling could be used to stimulate the minds and bodies of the elderly in ways modern science is only beginning to fully appreciate.
Nearly 200 skaters are taking part in the second annual Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championships Thursday through Saturday in St. Paul. Skaters dressed in hockey gear come out of the starting gate four abreast, trying to stay upright while navigating a course loaded with bumps, twists and drops. Last year, the event drew up to 90,000 to St. Paul. The 2013 finals are scheduled for Saturday night.

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, St. Paul City Council member Chris Tolbert and St. Paul City Council member Melvin Carter III tried out the Red Bull Crashed Ice course in St. Paul on Thursday. The Crashed Ice World Championship begins Thursday and runs through Sunday.
Highlights of Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations in Minnesota on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013 included the annual King Day breakfast in Minneapolis, and a march and program in St. Paul.

National Guard soldiers from eight states will be in Minnesota next week to test their skiing and shooting skills. The Guard sponsors regional biathlon competitions for guard teams from across the country. Winning brings bragging rights for the Guard teams, as well as the chance to compete against national teams around the world.

The Coast Guard Cutter Alder is stationed in Duluth to cut through the ice and keep shipping channels open. The 2,000-ton boat can ram through ice that's 3 feet thick, and leave a trail of open water even in the depth of a Duluth winter.
