Nearly half the golden-winged warblers in the world are in northern Minnesota right now for the summer breeding season, and the tiny birds have become the subjects of a two-year research project that could help determine whether they should be listed as a threatened or endangered species.
This week, two Obama cabinet members visited the Twin Cities, north Minneapolis residents coped with temporary housing, and fallen soldiers were remembered at Fort Snelling on Memorial Day.

For many people, Memorial Day Weekend includes a visit to the cemetery. It's John Peterson's mission to make sure those cemeteries are ready for the holiday. Peterson is the creator and owner of the Twin Cities business Grave Groomers. Some families hire Peterson to tend to graves of recently deceased loved ones. Others want him to care for the burial sites of those who passed away long ago.
North Minneapolis is still reeling from the tornado that struck on Sunday, May 22, 2011, that killed one person, injured 33 others, downed power lines and damaged homes. On Monday, the slow process of assessing damage and cleanup began.
Some 2,400 members of the Minnesota National Guard are deploying to the Middle East over the next several weeks. The state's official departure ceremony for those soldiers, members of the Guard's Red Bulls team, was held Sunday at Fort Snelling. Hundreds of people came to bid them farewell.
Lawmakers are working today with less than three days left in the legislative session, as the Capitol filled with demonstrators on gay marriage and budget cuts.
