Members of the Twin Cities' Somali and Turkish communities gathered together recently in Edina for Iftar, the evening meal when Muslims break their fasts during the month of Ramadan. During the Islamic month of Ramadan, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and sexual relations from dawn until dusk, which is intended to teach spirituality, self-restraint and humility.
Muslims are hoping to increase understanding of their religion at the State Fair this year by handing out small cards that read "Islam Explained," with background on the
religion whose adherents fear is being misunderstood by too many Americans.
President Obama is hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the White House tomorrow, the first direct talks between the two parties since Obama entered office. While expectations are low, the White House hopes they'll mark a renewed attempt at a long-elsuive peace.
