Minnesota poet Anthony Ceballos on his inspirations

Occasionally on Minnesota Now, host Cathy Wurzer talks to artists living in Minnesota about their work, their inspirations and their favorite work by fellow artists. On Tuesday, she sat down with Anthony Ceballos, a Minneapolis-based writer, performance poet and first generation descendant of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe.

Ceballos works as a bookseller and events coordinator at Birchbark Books in Minneapolis, an indie bookstore that promotes Native writers, artists, poets and creators.

Ceballos told Wurzer about his artistic inspirations. He’s drawn to create work that explores the pain of his difficult childhood. When he shines a light on his experience, he feels that it helps him heal, and he believes that sharing personal stories can also help people connect with one another.

Ceballos performed a poem of his called “The Day the Poems Failed Us.”
