How will journalists decide what to focus on in the upcoming trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin? How did they cope with the emotional toll of reporting on the killing of George Floyd and the civil unrest that followed?

Jury selection in Chauvin’s trial is currently scheduled to start March 8. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in Floyd’s killing last May.

Prosecutors in the case are arguing before the Court of Appeals on Monday afternoon that they should be allowed to reinstate a count of third-degree murder against Chauvin.

Listen to the recording of #AskMPRNews, a virtual event held last week featuring a conversation between MPR News host Angela Davis and the newsroom’s deputy managing editor Nancy Lebens about how MPR News covered Floyd’s killing. They also talked about the approach to covering the trial, which unlike others, will be streamed live, the jury selection process and what to expect from witnesses who will be called once testimony begins in late March.
