Diana Ross & the Supremes were No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart 50 years ago with “Someday We’ll Be Together.”
The song was recorded as Ross was exiting the Supremes, and was supposed to be her first solo single. But Motown Records head Berry Gordy reportedly wanted one more hit for the group, so it was released under their name — even though the other Supremes don’t sing on the track. Backing vocals were done by session singers instead.
