An already-challenging summer of construction along Interstate 94 between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul will get even tougher this weekend.

The freeway will be closed to all traffic in both directions between Interstate 35W and Huron Boulevard, near the Mississippi River and the University of Minnesota campus. That’s from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. 

Answering your questions on maintenance season

The closure is part of construction work already underway — and already causing traffic jams — along that stretch of I-94. Crews are making repairs to five freeway bridges.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said this weekend’s closure will allow crews to shift traffic patterns in the construction zone.

Traffic on I-94 will remain reduced to two lanes in each direction when the freeway reopens early Monday, and ramp closures will remain in place.

Also starting Monday, the Hiawatha LRT Trail between 15th Avenue South and Franklin Avenue will be closed through mid-July.

After this weekend’s closure, the bridge work project along I-94 will continue through fall.

But MnDOT said there will be a pause from mid-August through Labor Day, when all lanes are slated to reopen to accommodate heavier traffic heading to and from the Minnesota State Fair.
