Goodbye May, Hello summer! At least on the weather maps for the several days.

An unseasonably warm air mass will build across the Upper Midwest starting Friday. High temperatures will soar into the 80s once again across most of Minnesota.

Sunday through Tuesday looks like the warmest days of this early-season heat wave. Highs will likely exceed 90 degrees in much of western Minnesota early next week.

We have a good shot at reaching the record high of 88 degrees in the Twin Cities on Sunday afternoon.

Fire weather watch Sunday and Monday

The combinations of our recent lack of rain, near-record warmth, gusty winds, and low humidity will create extreme fire weather danger across the Upper Midwest, especially Sunday and Monday.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS SUNDAY...

South to southwesterly winds will be sustained as high as 25 mph with gusts up to 32 mph on Sunday. This winds combined with RH values in the 15 to 25 percent range will likely create a critical fire weather risk on Sunday. Fires could spread out of control quickly on Sunday due to this conditions. These conditions are possible again on Monday and Tuesday which could result in more critical fire weather conditions.

239 PM CDT Thu May 8 2025 ...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING FOR WIND AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR WESTERN, CENTRAL, AND SOUTHERN MINNESOTA...

The National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen has issued a Fire Weather Watch, which is in effect from Sunday morning through Sunday evening.

* AFFECTED AREA...Western Minnesota, Central Minnesota, and South Central Minnesota.

* WIND...South to southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 32 mph.

* HUMIDITY...As low as 15 percent.

* IMPACTS...any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

There are signs of possible rain next Thursday and cooler temperatures late next week.
