Blizzard and winter storm conditions north; hefty snowfall totals coming in

Quieter weather arrives Thursday through the weekend

The calendar says spring, but Old Man Winter is in full command across most of northern Minnesota.

Our powerful two-day storm has prompted winter storm warnings across most of northern Minnesota, and a rare April blizzard warning is up for the North Shore until 10 p.m. Wednesday evening.

...BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM CDT THIS EVENING...

* WHAT...Blizzard conditions. Additional snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.

* WHERE...Southern Cook and Southern Lake Counties. This includes the Tribal Lands of the Grand Portage Reservation.

* WHEN...Until 10 PM CDT this evening.

* IMPACTS...Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening, especially along Highway 61 on the North Shore. Travel could be very difficult. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening commute. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

Snowfall totals so far

Heavy wet snow is piling up across central and northern Minnesota. Here are some preliminary snowfall totals, in inches, as of early Wednesday evening:

  • Ulen (east of Fargo-Moorhead), 11.5

  • Bagley, 8

  • Pelican Rapids, 7.5

  • Parkers Prairie and Starbuck, 7

  • Moorhead, 7

  • Grand Marais, 6

  • Albany, 5.5

  • Duluth, 4 (snowing heavily)

Snow of varying intensity will continue across northern Minnesota Wednesday night then taper off by Thursday morning.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s NAM 3 km model shows the trend. The forecast model loop below runs between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday.

Quieter weather ahead

Our recent major storm parade takes a break across Minnesota for the next week or so. Skies will turn gradually sunnier into the upcoming weekend. Temperatures will moderate gradually.

Much warmer air is likely late next week into the weekend of April 12-13. Forecast models suggest 60s and 70s are likely.
