Light snow, especially north; 2-part thaw next week

We’re tracking a few bands of light snow across Minnesota from Friday into Saturday.

Snow will be light across the south with mainly slight snow showers and flurries. In the north, we’ll see more vigorous snow showers and greater coverage.

Accumulations will be less than one-half inch in the Twin Cities and the south; 1 to 3 inches of snow is likely across much of northern Minnesota through Saturday.

Classic winter weekend

Temperatures are pretty typical for late January this weekend. Highs will run in the 20s south and teens north.

A cold front Sunday brings a gusty northwest wind.

Thaw next week

Milder Pacific air will blow into Minnesota next week. Highs will reach the 30s across most of Minnesota by Monday.

The thaw looks likely to return Tuesday, but a shot of cooler air swipes in midweek next week.

Then it looks like the milder air will return late next week. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model cranks out temperatures into the 40s across much of Minnesota by next Friday!

It appears colder air will return after the thaw late next week.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s precipitation outlook slightly favors above-normal precipitation as we move into February:
