Above-freezing temperatures are expected for Thursday and Friday with increasing cloud cover. An arctic plunge is on track to sweep across the state Friday, bringing the coldest temperatures of the season.
January thaw
What a difference 24 hours can make in temperatures! We experienced a 30 to 40 degree swing across the state from Wednesday morning to Thursday morning.
A brief thawing period is expected Thursday into Friday, with temperatures remaining above freezing. Sunshine will be gradually obscured as cloud cover moves in from the northwest.
High temperatures on Thursday will rise into the 30s, with some areas of the North Shore reaching the 20s.

Expect another mild Thursday night with lows dropping only into the lower to mid-20s with mainly cloudy skies.
Friday will feature warmer temperatures with highs in the upper 30s for the metro area, and possibly 40-degree temperatures for southern Minnesota.
Winter whiplash
The next cold snap will strike with intensity, bringing gusty northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts over 30 mph. Northwestern Minnesota could see gusts surpassing 40 mph.
Our winds will stay elevated through the weekend into Monday. With low temperatures expected in the teens and low 20s below zero, wind chills will plummet into the 25 to 40 below zero range.
Cold weather advisories will be issued, and we may possibly see our first extreme cold watches and warnings for the area.
