One dead, one injured after ATV breaks through ice on northern Minnesota lake

Search teams recovered the body of an 18-year-old man from a northern Minnesota lake on Tuesday afternoon after an ATV broke through thin ice on Monday night.

It happened on Blackwater Lake in Cass County, southwest of Longville. The sheriff’s office said two people were riding on the ATV when it broke through the ice just before 6 p.m. Monday.

First responders were able to locate and rescue a 20-year-old man from the water. He was airlifted to a hospital in St. Cloud for treatment of hypothermia.

The search for the second rider started Monday night and resumed on Tuesday. Crews recovered his body just before 1 p.m.

The names of those involved have not been released.

Despite recent cold weather, authorities have been warning of dangerous early-season ice conditions on lakes across the state.
