High temperatures on Wednesday will peak in the late morning before a strong arctic cold front moves in, causing temperatures to plunge into the teens and single digits by evening.
As temperatures plummet, winds will quickly intensify from the northwest with sustained speeds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts reaching up to 50 mph. A wind advisory has been issued for Wednesday, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., for more than two-thirds of the state.
High pressure will settle in on Thursday, but the cold air mass will prevent temperatures from rising above the upper teens, with single digits expected in the northwestern portions of the state. Wind chill values will range from single digits to teens below zero.
A few hours of light snow are possible with the passage of the front early Wednesday, reaching the Twin Cities area between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Accumulations are expected to be light, generally less than one-half inch.
A stronger warmup is forecast as southerly winds return for the weekend. High temperatures will rise above the average of 33 degrees, with a chance of reaching the 40s by Sunday!
Forecast trends indicate a stretch of above-average temperatures lasting through mid-December.
