A strong low-pressure system in the northwestern Caribbean is forecasted to strengthen this week, potentially bringing heavy rainfall and flash flooding to Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Center is focusing its attention on Tropical Cyclone Nine in the northwestern Caribbean and portions of Central America. A tropical depression or storm is highly likely to develop within the next 48 hours. This broad area of low pressure will continue moving northward across the northwestern Caribbean Sea, into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.

The governments of Cuba and Mexico have issued tropical storm warnings and hurricane watches in response to the developing weather system.

There is a potential for significant storm surge, heavy rainfall and flooding, and strong winds across the north and eastern Gulf Coast. These strong winds will reach the southern portions of Florida Wednesday morning.

Heavy rainfall will spread into the southeastern United States from Wednesday to Friday, with forecast models predicting between 4 to 8 inches of rain for Florida’s Gulf Coast.

One positive aspect of this situation is the anticipated rainfall following landfall, which could benefit the southeast region. The moisture from the upcoming rainfall will be beneficial for addressing the severe to extreme drought currently impacting multiple states.
