Additional showers and storms for Saturday night; cooler, dry Sunday

Spotty showers and thunderstorms are expected mainly in the metro area and southeastern Minnesota. Cooler temperatures are forecast for Sunday, with highs in the upper 60s. A dry spell is anticipated this week as high pressure moves in.

Last chance for rain

Saturday night presents one of our few chances for precipitation, as a cold front pushes into eastern and southeastern Minnesota, triggering some showers and storms. The Storm Prediction Center has a marginal risk for severe with storms that do develop. The primary hazards are strong winds, and large hail.

Storm activity is expected to wind down before the overnight hours, ending by early Sunday morning.

Temperatures for Saturday night drop into the mid 50s, cooler 40s to the north. Cloud cover will decrease from north to south, with lingering clouds into Sunday for southern Minnesota.

Touch of fall

Expect temperatures to return to fall-like conditions on Sunday, with highs in the upper 60s. Canadian high pressure will settle in for much of next week, bringing clear skies and little to no chances of precipitation.

Seasonally average highs are forecast for the first half of the week, with a warm-up bringing temperatures into the mid to upper 70s by Wednesday, thanks to southerly winds.

Record-setting September?

The Climate Prediction Center's outlook for the next 6-10 days indicates above-average temperatures and below-average precipitation. September may be on track to be one of the driest and warmest in the state’s history.
