Arts Briefs is a weekly roundup of Minnesota arts news compiled by the MPR News arts and culture team.

Grand Portage National Monument in northern Minnesota is hosting its annual 

The free event celebrates the site’s Native heritage that dates back millennia and the fur trapping history from 1797. It includes music, dancing, craft demonstrations and workshops. 

In conjunction, the Grand Portage Band hosts its 

 powwow just up the road on Saturday and Sunday.

The scholarship awards $10,000 to a Native artist in honor of the Minnesota Ojibwe artist who died in 2022.

WallowingBull is a member of the White Earth Nation and is based in the Fargo-Moorhead area. His colorful drawings and paintings explore Indigenous identity and U.S. popular culture. WallowingBull is the son of another renowned Minnesota artist, Frank Big Bear.

The Walker Art Center of Minneapolis will 

Guest curator Jess Pretty is calling on Minnesota dance-makers and movement artists. They are encouraged to present work to be considered for the 

The event will be the Walker’s 52nd annual dance showcase.

The Academy of American Poets in New York is awarding $1.1 million to 22 Poet Laureate Fellows for 2024. 

Among these is Minneapolis poet laureate 

All recipients will be given $50,000, intended to to support public poetry programs. Erdrich’s program is called the Poetry Service Announcement and looks to connect various communities in Minneapolis through poetry.

These communities will include Native Americans, other people of color, refugees, people affected by the housing crisis and people impacted by the justice system.

The free event includes live chalk and spray painting by local and international artists. A national organization called Jackalope Arts will host an art fair with handcrafted goods.

All events take place on Nicollet Avenue between 6th and 11th Street.

Several Minnesotans will be playing in the finals of the 

Tune into ESPN Sunday at 1 p.m. to see Dia Lee of St. Paul Park compete in women’s singles. Meanwhile, Lexi Hugeback of Kasson and Jamie Graham of Hamlet will compete in Mixed Doubles.
