Tornado watch posted for most of Minnesota through 8 p.m. Tuesday

A cold front will spawn more potential severe weather and heavy rainfall. A tornado watch has been posted for most most of Minnesota until Tuesday 8 p.m.

Strong storms Tuesday; cooler Wednesday 

Severe weather blew through portions of northwestern and north-central Minnesota Monday night into the early hours Tuesday. High wind gusts were the primary threat. Ada in Norman County measured a 67 mph wind gust at 3:01 a.m..

Tuesday will be yet another unsettled day. Ongoing scattered showers and storms in northern Minnesota will largely fizzle out slowly during the morning, but that same cold front will be moving across the state and develop more storms later this afternoon and evening for central and eastern Minnesota. 

Storms that develop today could become severe with the threat of large hail and damaging winds. There’s a slight risk (level 2 of 5) of severe weather.

It will be steamy across southern Minnesota ahead of the cool front and late day storms. Highs will be well into the 80s with muggy dew points in the 70s across southern Minnesota.

There continues to be a risk of flooding as well since any cluster of storms could produce heavy rainfall on top of saturated soils and surfaces. A flood watch remains in place through tonight for northeastern Minnesota into early Wednesday.

Behind the front it will be cooler Wednesday and Thursday with highs mostly in the 70s. Parts of northern Minnesota may only see highs in the 60s.

There will be some lingering showers Wednesday mostly in far southeastern Minnesota. Otherwise, most of us get a brief dry break and a break from the very humid air of Tuesday. More rain develops for the southern half of the state Thursday.

If that weren’t enough, yet another round of rain, which could be potentially heavy, develops Friday into Saturday for much of the state.

Additional rainfall totals will come in at several plus inches for parts of the state into Sunday.
