Increasing clouds Thursday with showers developing west, spreading east

The weekend will be warmer but active weather continues into next week

Clouds increase Thursday with showers and a couple thunderstorms developing in western Minnesota. That rain will spread east Thursday night into Friday.

Warmer, brighter east; showers move in west

Clouds will increase from west to east Thursday as will the chance of rain. Highs will be warmer for most of the state. Twin Cities temperatures will reach the upper 70s.

Eastern Minnesota should remain mostly dry during the day, but rain will spread east Thursday night into Friday. Western Minnesota will see some showers and thunder fill in by midday.

There could be a few thunderstorms Thursday afternoon mainly in southwestern Minnesota. There’s a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) that one or two storms could turn briefly severe.

Saturday will still have an isolated chance of a shower or thunder but it will also be warmer, closer to 80 degrees for southern Minnesota.

Sunday is likely to begin a string of high temperatures of 80 degrees or warmer in southern Minnesota.

The warmer weather ahead will also help provide a boost of energy that could lead to stronger storms and heavier rainfall potential.

We’re watching two more systems after the upcoming Thursday night-Friday system. They’ll bring more thunderstorms Sunday into Sunday night and Tuesday into Tuesday night.

Drought nearly eliminated in Minnesota

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report continues to show improvement in Minnesota drought conditions. Now only 2 percent of the state is in moderate drought in north-central Minnesota.

Notably, moderate drought finally has disappeared from far southeastern Minnesota in Mower and Fillmore counties.

Most of the state saw 1 to 2 inches of rainfall in the past seven days broadly. Northeastern Minnesota was the one spot with less at just about one-quarter to one-half inch of rainfall.
