Wednesday’s snowfall was a Valentine’s Day record for Twin Cities

The lack of snowfall this winter has been staggering, but we finally saw a significant snowfall in the Twin Cities Wednesday night. The snowfall broke a daily record and was the largest since last spring.

A record snowfall for Valentine’s Day

We finally did it! Even a record warm winter should see some snowfall but this season has left us largely high and dry until now. The Twin Cities received nearly 7 inches of snow and most of the metro area picked up 4 to 7 inches. 

This one missed northern Minnesota, which is also way behind on seasonal snowfall, although they have seen more snow than the Twin Cities area this winter.

The snowfall broke a record for Valentine’s Day at 6.9 inches. The old record, set 74 years ago in 1950, was 6.4 inches.

It’s also the largest snowfall by far of this winter season for the Twin Cities. The previous largest snowfall was 2.7 inches Oct. 30-31. It was the biggest snow since last March 31-April 1, when we saw 8.5 inches of snow. 

If you’re hoping it’s part of a late winter trend, don’t hold your breath. The weather looks mostly dry the next seven days and in fact we’re in for more temps in the 30s and 40s next week, which will melt much of this snow. Get out and enjoy it while you can.
