We have more air quality issues this week with lingering smoke in northern Minnesota Tuesday and ozone becoming a problem for the Twin Cities metro area due to heat and sunshine.

The peak of the heat still looks to be Wednesday and Thursday when temperatures will be in the mid to upper 90s for much of southern Minnesota. Dew points will likely not reach the 70s for extended periods, meaning the heat index will stay within the 98 to 104 range.

Some thunder chances riding the ‘heat dome’

Minnesota will continue to be on the edge of the “cap” or warm air aloft that prevents storms from bubbling up. This means we’ll see some occasional spotty or isolated thunder chances. The next best chance comes late Tuesday into Tuesday night and early Wednesday.

Late Thursday and Friday may also yield some thunder chances but uncertainty remains in this hot pattern with location and timing of thunderstorm development.
