Educators had walking picket lines outside schools Tuesday morning — including at Justice Page Middle School in south Minneapolis, and at Washburn High School.
Local officials were joined by state and national teachers' union leaders as drivers in passing cars unleashed honking horns in support of the strike.
Greta Callahan, president of the teachers' chapter with the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers, said district officials aren't willing to make needed changes. Teachers and support staff say they want more pay, lower class sizes and more mental health supports in schools, among other demands.
In a statement Monday night after the strike was announced, district officials said they were disappointed but "we know our organizations’ mutual priorities are based on our deep commitment to the education of Minneapolis students. MPS will remain at the mediation table nonstop in an effort to reduce the length and impact of this strike."
