A chilly week ahead; warmer outlook 8 to 14 days out

The official weekend snow tally at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was 2.8 inches through 6 a.m. Sunday. There was some light snow after 6 a.m., so the weekend snow total could go up slightly.

The National Weather Service office in Chanhassen reported 5.3 inches. I measured 3.5 inches in St. Paul and meteorologist Bill Endersen reported 3 inches in Minneapolis. Lakeville, in the south metro, reported 7.5 inches.

There were a few double-digit snow totals in parts of southern Minnesota, including 12 inches in  St. James and 11 inches in Lakefield.

Here's a snapshot of weekend snow totals:

You can check snow accumulations for Minnesota and western Wisconsin as they’re posted by the NWS. Hover over any location on the NWS snow map to see the snow total and the time of observation.

Some observations on the NWS map are from Saturday afternoon, so some observations do not include snow totals for the entire weekend.

You may have to hit the “last 48 hours” tab in the upper left of the NWS map to see all the weekend snow reports if you are viewing the map on Monday.

The snow caused some slippery roads this weekend, but there was enough snow for sledding in some locations:

Chilly week

Monday highs are expected to be in the 20s across most of Minnesota:

Our average Twin Cities high temp is 31 degrees on Dec. 3.

Twin Cities highs are expected to be in the lower 20s Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, but we could sneak into the upper 20s on Wednesday.

If that's too cool for you, hang in there; the NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a tendency for warmer than normal temps over Minnesota and Wisconsin for the Dec. 10 through Dec. 16 time period:

Snow chance north midweek

Some scattered light snow showers are possible Tuesday afternoon/evening in northern Minnesota.

There will be a better chance of light snow in northern Minnesota Wednesday and Wednesday evening.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale forecast model shows the potential snow pattern Wednesday and Wednesday evening:

The color chart to the right of the loop refers to the strength of the signal that returns to the radar, not to the amount of snow.

As always, updated weather information can be heard on the Minnesota Public Radio Network, and you will also see updated weather info on the MPR News live weather blog.

I hope that you have a good week!
