At marathon, a former Supreme Court justice plays a mournful tune

In the category of uniquely Minnesotan, Alan Page playing his sousaphone on the route of the Twin Cities Marathon near Kenwood Park still stands above all others.

The idea that a Minnesota Supreme Court justice and his wife would be out with the little people was nothing if not comforting.

“It became a tradition after the first time we did it,” Page told the Star Tribune’s Rachel Blount in a 2010 story. “When I ran around the lakes, people training for the marathon would ask whether I’d be there again.

His wife, Diane, died eight days ago. In her honor, Page again stood at Knox and Douglas on Sunday.
