On Wednesday DFL Gov. Mark Dayton announced a school safety proposal. He's asking for over $20 million to help with school safety. That includes $5 million for grants to provide mental health services to students.
Republican lawmakers also plan to make school security a priority.
Last month, Sen. Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) introduced legislation that would establish revenue for school safety. Nelson, who is a candidate for Congress in Minnesota's 1st District, chairs the Senate's education finance committee. The money would be separate from the established school safety levy. Under the bill, schools would be able to allocate the funds themselves.
Sen. Nelson spoke with host MPR's Mike Mulcahy about the proposal.
