Corcoran police responded to an unusual hit-and-run call over the weekend.
Police say they found a dead 2- or 3-year-old black male weighing approximately 200 pounds near the intersection of Maple Hill Road and County Road 10 on Sunday morning. It had been struck by a car sometime during the night, the Police Department said on its Facebook page.
Bear sightings are uncommon in Corcoran, police said. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, they're found mainly in the northern third of Minnesota, but range as far south as central Minnesota. They often roam long distances in the fall, looking for food. Corcoran is about 22 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
Between 12,000 and 15,000 black bears live in Minnesota.
Authorities said the bear's hide will be used "for educational purposes for the Police Department's Firearms Safety Program."
