Minnesota officials are still awaiting official word from the federal government on their request for a waiver regarding reinsurance. Earlier this year the state Legislature passed a $542 million package that would help health insurance companies in the individual market pay for large claims. But the state needs a waiver from the federal government before it can go into effect.
Gov. Mark Dayton says he's received word that the waiver will be granted, but as a consequence Minnesota will lose $369 million in federal funds for MinnesotaCare. If that happens, the Legislature may want to come up with a new health care plan.
One of the key leaders on this issue in the state Senate is Republican Michelle Benson. She spoke to MPR's Cathy Wurzer.
