Even though treatment for mental illness has made its way into mainstream conversations, patients still face problems with social stigma and ready access to help.
Online and app-based therapies could be an answer for those who don't feel comfortable seeking out a therapist or who live too far from cities to make in-person therapy a viable option.
MPR News reporter Mark Zdechlik recently spoke to Dr. Karen Cassiday about how she uses online therapy in her practice. Both joined MPR News host Tom Weber to discuss how therapy can move into the 21st Century. Cassiday is the president of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.
