U.S. Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford was appointed by President Obama and re-appointed by President Trump.
The nation's top military leader answered questions at the National Press Club about the fight against the Islamic State and other terrorist groups, the situation in Afghanistan and North Korea, and the strength of U.S. alliances.
Dunford is the principal military advisor to the president, secretary of defense and National Security Council. Prior to becoming chairman of the joint chiefs on October 1, 2015, he served as the 36th Commandant of the Marine Corps. He was commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan from February 2013 to August 2014.
