Updraft® - Minnesota Weather News

Warm weekend coming with some storms

June heat really launched into Minnesota today. Most of the state away from Lake Superior warmed well into the 80s or low 90s. The Twin Cities hit 90 for the first time this year after reaching "only" 84 during May.

The weekend will be warmer than normal, but less hot than Friday.

Scattered thunderstorms will be part of the weekend as well, and some could become strong or severe. Late this afternoon the radar was showing many scattered showers and thunderstorms popping up thanks to daytime heating.

Thunderstorms are likely to continue to increase well into the night. Some storms might become severe in northern Minnesota or western Wisconsin where there is a marginal risk of severe weather.

A trailing cold front will produce the greatest risk of severe storms late today in eastern North Dakota and north central South Dakota.

Saturday storms

More thunderstorms will bubble up during Saturday's heating as the cold front from the Dakotas advances across Minnesota. Storms might break out in eastern Minnesota, including the general Twin Cities area, by early or mid Saturday afternoon.

Storms will continue to grow as they spread eastward along with the cold front. In general, thunderstorms on Saturday will be most likely east of I-35. Some of those storms might become severe in eastern Minnesota. The greatest risk of severe weather on Saturday is likely to be in the slight risk area indicated over the Arrowhead and much of the northern half of Wisconsin.
