Former law professor and Minneapolis NAACP President Nekima Levy-Pounds will formally announce her run for mayor of Minneapolis Tuesday afternoon.

She told her followers on Twitter of her intent to run Monday night. She plans to hold a news conference in front of the 4th Precinct police station in Minneapolis on the one-year anniversary of the fatal shooting of Jamar Clark, an African-American man, by a white police officer. Both the time and the place are symbolic for Levy-Pounds, who has been a prominent member of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Should she be elected, she plans to make addressing racial inequity a key focus of her administration. She spoke with MPR's Cathy Wurzer.
