For many, the 1980s were the heyday of the Twin Cities music scene, and Daniel Corrigan was there to document it. Corrigan has photographed The Replacements, Soul Asylum, Husker Du, Babes in Toyland — the list goes on. He's toured the country with local bands, and captured dozens of national acts on their way through Twin Cities venues.
A sampling of his work is now available in a new book, "Heyday: 35 Years of Music in Minneapolis."
Born in New York City, Corrigan grew up just north of Stillwater, Minn., and picked up photography at the University of Minnesota. He got his start at the Minnesota Daily.
"My dad did not raise me as an artist," he says in the book's introduction. "My plan was to work for the CIA."
Photography took over his life, though, and Corrigan turned it into a career. From the infamous rooftop shoot of The Replacements to the all-night dance party in honor of Prince this April, the photos in "Heyday" leap between blockbuster moments and intimate behind-the-scenes shots.
Corrigan joined The Current's Andrea Swensson to talk about his photography career — and to share the secret to a great photo.
