The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says the shooting happened Sunday at the home near Lanesboro of 45-year-old Kristofer Daniel Youngquist. The BCA says Youngquist emerged from the house and went back inside. Inside the house, he was carrying a rifle and pointed it at officers during a three-hour standoff. The officer fired at Youngquist from outside the house.
The gun was later determined to be a pellet gun.
The police chief declined to say much about the investigation, but said "nothing was done inappropriately."
Thompson was placed on standard administrative leave.
Correction (Oct. 25, 2016): This story has been updated with new information from the Buerau of Criminal Apprehension on Youngquist's location when he was shot.
