Today's Morning Edition music is from the song "Cherish" by the Association, which was No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart 50 years ago.
It was the California-based band's first No. 1 hit. At the time, DJs were reluctant to play any song on the radio that was longer than three minutes and this one clocked in at 3:13.
Instead of shortening it, the record company decided to just say that it was three minutes long on the label. That seemed to work and the band had themselves a radio-friendly hit.
