Ken Merryman wasn't looking for the wreck of the Antelope when he found it.

Merryman and fellow Great Lakes Shipwreck Preservation Society member Jerry Ellison were simply crossing the lake this summer when he asked Ellison to keep an eye out for it. And then it showed up on the sonar. "It was unmistakable — we just accidentally ran over it."

The Antelope sprung a leak on October 7, 1897 and gently sunk to the bottom of Lake Superior. Thankfully, all the members of the crew were able to safely leave the ship.

Merryman joined MPR News host Tom Weber to talk about finding the Antelope, and why he referred to it as "spectacularly intact" when interviewed by The Duluth News Tribune.
