More landslides possible in Twin Cities

West River Parkway in Minneapolis near the University of Minnesota will reopen to traffic Thursday night for the first time in over two years.

The roadway was closed after it was covered with mud and debris caused by a landslide in June 2014.

Retaining walls had to be built and drainage systems installed before the road below Fairview University Hospital could reopen.

The landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall and there are concerns that it could happen again in other vulnerable areas.

The potential for landslides in our region has not been studied thoroughly and Carrie Jennings, policy director for the Freshwater Society and a geology professor at the University of Minnesota, thinks that should change. She spoke to MPR's Cathy Wurzer.
