We topped out at 71 degrees in the Twin Cities yesterday, which is 13 degrees below average.

Today will be a bit warmer, with much less wind and a cloud/sun mix. An isolated shower could pop up later in the day.

Highs will be in the 70s over most of Minnesota, with some 60s possible along the north shore of Lake Superior:

Weekend thunder chance

An approaching low pressure system could ignite some scattered thunderstorms Saturday and Saturday night.

The strongest storms would tend to be Saturday evening into the overnight hours and very early Sunday morning.

The Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service shows a slight risk of severe weather over southwestern Minnesota Saturday and Saturday night. There is a marginal risk of severe weather from northwestern Minnesota through central and southeastern Minnesota:

Occasional scattered thunderstorms will also be possible on Sunday.

Rivers running high

Flood warnings remain in effect for portions of the St. Croix River. Here is the statement issued early this morning by the Duluth office of the National Weather Service:

* UNTIL 145 AM CDT TUESDAY

AT 100 AM CDT...THE SAINT CROIX RIVER STAGE AT DANBURY WAS AT 6.9

FEET AND SUBSIDING. FARTHER DOWNSTREAM...THE RIVER STAGE AT

GRANTSBURG WAS AT AN ESTIMATED 15.8 FEET AND SUBSIDING. FLOODING IS

OCCURRING OR FORECAST TO OCCUR ALONG THE SAINT CROIX RIVER THROUGH

AT LEAST THE WEEKEND. AT DANBURY...THE RIVER LEVEL IS BELOW FLOOD

STAGE AND WILL CONTINUE SUBSIDING THROUGH AT LEAST EARLY THIS

WEEKEND. AT GRANTSBURG...THE RIVER LEVEL WILL CONTINUE SUBSIDING BUT

IS ESTIMATED TO REMAIN IN A FLOOD STAGE THROUGH THE WEEKEND.

RECORD STAGE IS 15.1 FEET. THE CREST AT DANBURY...WHICH MAY HAVE

BEEN AROUND 8.5 FEET...AND THE ESTIMATED CREST FOR GRANTSBURG...ARE

NEAR OR IN EXCESS OF THE RECORDS. IF YOU LIVE NEAR THE SAINT CROIX

RIVER IN MINNESOTA OR WISCONSIN...PREPARE NOW FOR FLOODING.

The St. Croix River at Stillwater has risen more than 7 1/2 feet this week, and it is expected to rise an additional foot and one half by Saturday afternoon.
