New federal rules on the commercial use of drones will take effect in late August. The Federal Aviation Administration announced the rules earlier this week after years of lobbying from lawmakers, drone makers and tech companies.

Now, come August, it'll be easier to use small drones for everything from monitoring crop fields to checking bridges for disrepair.

Minneapolis-based Sentera is a manufacturer and designer of drones, the sensors drones carry, and the software to manage those sensors.

Up until now, the company has had a special exemption from the FAA to operate.

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Sentera Executive Vice President Greg Emerick about what the new rules mean.
