Hot, muggy weather will get reinforcements this weekend as a warm front leads the way slowly northward across Minnesota.
Although a plume of high clouds from the southwest will slow our temperature climb a bit this morning, expect high temperatures this afternoon to range from the upper 70s in northern Minnesota to the upper 80s in the southwest. The Twin Cities are likely to heat into about the mid 80s.
Instability is building into the state from the west, and that means a chance of thunderstorms with the heating of the day across about the northern half of the state. Some of these storms could become severe today, mainly in northwestern Minnesota.
Sunday will be hotter and more humid as we will be in the warm sector. That's the muggy air mass behind the warm front and ahead of the trailing cold front.
The upcoming combination of heat and humidity have caused the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday for parts of Minnesota.
Some strong or even severe thunderstorms might be ongoing early in the day on Sunday. Later in the day, the advancing cold front will begin to cross Minnesota. That front should provide the dynamic boot to generate some severe storms over a larger area of the state as Father's Day heats up. In the metro area, the risk of severe storms is likely to hold off until Sunday evening or possibly even after sunset.
After the cold front passes late tomorrow, the stage will be set for cooler, but still very summery, weather for much of the upcoming week.
