Daily Digest: Dayton, Cornish and Sanders

Good morning. It's Thursday and time to check some political news. Here's the Digest.

1. If Gov. Mark Dayton and top legislative leaders are to agree on a special session to pass a tax bill and a bonding bill, they'll need to resolve a lingering, deep disagreement over metro-area mass transit. And it doesn't look promising. (MPR News)

2. Dayton spent Wednesday on the road, making a pitch for his special session priorities in Rochester and Mankato. His office says he will go to Worthington and Moorhead today. The governor is highlighting the benefits the areas would see if lawmakers agree to pass a bonding bill and tax measure that meet his demands.  (Star Tribune)

3. State Rep. Tony Cornish, R-Vernon Center, is taking heat for a letter to the editor in yesterday's Star Tribune where he offered what he considered to be helpful tips to avoid being shot by the police.  Some who read the letter considered it racist. Cornish, who chairs the House Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee, said he's sick of cops being scapegoated when something goes wrong.  (Fox 9)

4. Bernie Sanders is scheduled to meet with President Obama today, as Obama inches toward an endorsement of Hillary Clinton for president. Obama was on the Tonight Show last night. When host Jimmy Fallon asked whether Obama thinks Republicans are happy with their nominee, Obama said, “We are, but I don’t know how they’re feeling.” (Politico)

5. Even though many rank-and-file Republicans have lined up behind Donald Trump there are still some holdouts. Some are still looking at ways to prevent Trump from getting the party's nomination at its convention in Cleveland next month. (NBC)
