Daily Digest: Tax bill dies, Clinton makes history

Good morning and welcome to Tuesday. The governor has used a pocket veto to take down the tax bill, and the presidential nominating process is wrapping up as people in six states vote today. We'll have live coverage of tonight's results on the radio at 7 tonight.  Here's the Digest.

1. Gov. Mark Dayton let a midnight deadline pass without signing the $259 million tax cut bill approved by the Legislature a couple weeks ago. That means the bill is dead, and if lawmakers want a new one they'll have to negotiate with the governor on a special session. There were tax breaks in the bill for farmers, business owners and college students. There was also an exemption for the owners of the new Major League Soccer franchise to clear the way to build a new stadium in St. Paul. Dayton is expected to say more later this morning. (MPR News)

2. Even before today's voting the Associated Press calculated that Hillary Clinton had secured enough delegate support to win the Democratic Presidential nomination. It's the first time in the country's history a woman has won the backing of a major party for president, and it comes near the end of a long, grueling race. (Washington Post)

3. As many Republicans were denouncing Donald Trump's remarks about the judge in the Trump University case, Trump himself held a conference call with campaign surrogates Monday and urged them to back him up. He wants them to step up criticism of the judge and journalists. According to this article "there was no mention of apologizing or backing away from his widely criticized remarks about U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel." (Bloomberg Politics)

4. Now that Clinton has clinched the nomination, President Obama is likely to endorse her and start campaigning on her behalf. And he's expected to be just the first of many prominent Democrats to campaign for her. (New York Times)

5. Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders didn't react well when reporters asked him yesterday about dropping out of the race. (Politico)
