The human brain is roughly bigger than our two fists. It contains 86 billion neurons, and 20 percent of the oxygen from our lungs and the blood pumped from our heart flows to the brain.
Despite its importance in our development, mobility and cognition, much of how the brain functions remains a mystery.
Today, over 100 scientists who are working to unlock those mysteries are in town for the 30th anniversary of the McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience.
Three members of the endowment joined NewsCut blogger Bob Collins in studio for this week's Friday Roundtable:
• Dr. Huda Zogbi is the director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's Hospital and a professor at Baylor College of Medicine.
• Tom Jessell is the co-director of the Mortimer B Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute, co-director of the Kavli Institute for Brain science at Columbia University.
• J Anthony Movshon is the director of the NYU Center for Neural Science.
