White House to launch microbiome initiative

The White House will announce a significant initiative today on research on the microbiome, the microorganisms that live all around us in soils, the air and in and on our bodies.

Our understanding of the diversity and importance of microbial communities has grown dramatically, and scientists have been pushing for more government support for research in the field.

University of Minnesota professor Dan Knights is in Washington, D.C., for the announcement. He studies the microbiome in the human gut.

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with him.
